Convict Notes
Thomas Shoe SMITH (or Shoesmith, Shoes Smith, Charles Smith, John Shoe Smith) was convicted at London Gaol Delivery on 5 April 1827 for burglary. Death sentence, commuted to Life. Gaol report: "good in gaol" (Also convicted with him was a Edward Plowman). Hulk report: "good". Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship "Asia" voyage 3, arriving there 1827. Ship surgeon's report: "orderly". Married man, wife Elizabeth Shoesmith. Stated he had been living in Haggerstone, working in his trade. Protestant religion. Aged 24 yrs. Colony of VDL: Assigned to work. 1828: at Clarence Plains, (east side of Derwent River, Hobart). 1828: on duty of the Guard Boat. Several records of misconduct and punishments. 1830: Going onboard the "Lady of the Lake' with intent to abscond from the Colony. 50 lashes & 6 mths to serve in a Chain Gang work party. Ticket of Leave status granted. DEATH: 17 Oct 1838 died. (ref. noted on Convict record)
