Petition for mitigation of sentence (Fiche 3181; 4/1853 p.315) --------------------------------------------------------------- 14 Oct 1813. On list of convicts disembarked from "Earl Spencer" and forwarded to Revd Samuel Marsden at Parramatta for distribution. William Smith, Labourer. --------------------------------------------------------------- 29 Nov 1817. Servant to Revd Robert Cartwright. Petition for mitigation of sentence. That Petitioner arrived in the colony in the Transport ship Earl Spencer in the year 1813 under sentence of transportation for Life. That on his arrival he was assigned to the Rev. Robert Cartwright with whom and his present Mistress he has remained till the present period and during the above servitude his conduct has been such as he trusts has merited the approbation of his Employers. Petitioner therefore humbly hopes Your Excellency will be graciously pleased to take his good character into consideration and grant him such mitigation of sentence, as to Your Excellency shall seem meet. And petitioner will ever pray… Signed, William Smith. I beg leave to certify that the Petitioner has lived with me upwards of two years during which period he has behaved honestly, soberly and industriously.
