Note: There were 2 men named William Smith on this ship. -------------------------------------------------------------- On list of prisoners transported to Newcastle per "Prince Leopold", 26 Jan 1821. William Smith, Tried at Crim Court, Sydney, 22 Nov to 14 Dec 1820. sentence 7 years. Trade, Gardener. Per Neptune (2) Original sentence, Leicester, 30 July 1817, 14 years. Jonas Delworth, Tried at Crim Court, Sydney, 22 Nov to 14 Dec 1820. sentence life, labourer, Per Neptune (2) Original sentence, Warwick, 2 Aug 1817, 14 years. ---------------------------------------------------- To be transported to Newcastle for seven years. In reports of prisoners tried at Court of Criminal Jurisdiction Jonas Delworth and William Smith, Charged with burglariously entering the house of Simeon Lord Esq, at Sydney and stealing thereout various articles above the value of 40. Guilty. Sentence: To be transported to Newcastle for the respective terms of their natural lives. (Added) The sentence of Wm Smith to be commuted to seven years at the recommendation of the Judge Advocate. L.M. (L.M. would have been the Governor, Lachlan Macquarie.) -------------------------------------------------------------- 25 Sep 1823. William Smith, aged 40, and Cleaver aged 50, for stealing a wether lamb, property of Mrs. Ann Preston, of Wykin, near Hinckley, on the 8th July last —Smith—Guilty— Death; —Cleaver not Guilty.  Leicester Journal, 8 Aug 1817. At Leicester Assizes, … W. Smith, for stealing a lamb; … were severally found guilty, and received sentence of Death; …. Northampton Mercury, 9 Aug 1817. LEICESTER Thursday July 30. CROWN SIDE, from the calendar is 21, SHEEP-STEALING William Smith and George Cleaver were tried tor sheep the only proof was, that mutton was found in Smith's house which precisely Ned the skin of the lamb stolen, which was left in the field. to Cleavers house, another man (Merrick) and his wife lodged, and slept in the same room with Cleaver and his wife, Mrs. that she did not hear Cleaver coming to his bed Merrick deposed  on the night the theft was committed, and that she was persuaded by …. some meat when the constables were searchIng the adjoining house (Smith’s). She could not tell whether the meat was beef or mutton, she had been so little accustomed to see meat. Smith was convicted, and Cleaver acquitted They were miserable looking men.
