HEALTH & WELFARE: 19 Sept 1867 to 5 Feb 1868 - Cascades Invalid Depot, South Hobart. 3 March 1870 to 17 March 1870. John SNAPE, aged 70 yrs, pauper/invalid. Ship to Colony Coromandel. DEATH: 19 June 1874, John SNAPE, born Warwick, England, aged 77 yrs, labourer, at Hobart Hospital, cause - senilis. (ref. TA 35/1/8 no. 2105) BURIAL: 22 June 1874, John SNAPE. Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Hobart, Tasmania.




John SNAPE was convicted at Coventry, Warwick, England on 22 March 1838 for stealing - a frock. Gaol Report: "Convicted before. Bad character & connections. Had been transported before in 1823 for 7 yrs- to Bermuda (served 6 yrs 7mths). Discharged. This conviction - 7 yr sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia per the ship 'Coromandel' arriving there 25 Oct 1838. Married man. Wife Susan at native place, London. Colony of VDL: Secretary's order to be kept at labour at the Pubic Works. 1839: Probation Party group at Sandy Bay, Hobart. Neglect of duty - 25 lashes. 1840: a Constable - neglect of duty. 3 mths hard labour. 1841: a Constable - neglect of duty. 3 mths hard labour on the roads and recommended to be dismissed from Police Force. 19 May 1843: Ticket of Leave granted. 1845: Free Certificate issued, no. 1845. 16 March 1868: Idle & disorderly. 2 mths hard labour.
