Richard arrived 31 Oct 1835 in New South Wales,11 June 1839 he absconded from his employer and sneaked off to the nearest police station to complain about his master, he received 50 lashes for this misdemeanour. 21 Sep 1839 Richard absconded again this time he received 25 lashes. 30 Sep 1839 Richard then 29 married Margaret Farnell. 20 Dec 1848 he received an official pardon and his life sentence was commuted.
