Tasmanian Records: Conduct Record: https://libraries.tas.gov.au/Digital/CON31-1-38/CON31-1-38P171 No 501. Walter Snow. See Record for full details. Walter was sentenced to Newcastle for 5 years in 1818, as punishment for stealing wearing apparel. He again was tried in 1827, but acquitted. Dead. See Memo, 22 April 1839. ---------------------------------------------------------------- CRIMINAL COURT, LAUNCESTON, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24. Richard Clanson was charged with stealing 250 pounds weight of beef on the 23d of November; the properly of some person unknown and Walter Snow was charged with receiving it knowing it to have been stolen. Both— Acquitted. Hobart Town Gazette, 3 Feb 1827. A man named Walter Snow, holding a ticket-of-leave, was apprehended on the 20th March last, on suspicion of having stolen property in his possession, and was once, or twice examined before Mr. Wales, the Police Magistrate, and remanded for further examination to the gaol, where he was placed in a solitary, or a cell by himself, when about seven o'clock in the morning of Wednesday last, the 3rd of April, he was discovered hanging by a black silk handkerchief which he …. the cell in which he was confined, and quite dead. The coroner’s jury returned a verdict of “Felo-de-se,” and the body was buried privately in the Morven Burial Ground. Cornwall Chronicle, 6 April 1839.

PUBLIC NOTICE WHEREAS the following Persons have absented themselves from Government Labour : — This is therefore to caution the Inhabitants in general against harbouring, encouraging, employing, or secreting any of the said Absentees, on pain of rigid Prosecution ; — Viz. William Fitzgerald - Edward Scarr John Madden - John Cullen John Stenning - Randal Oar John Carter - Walter Snow John Carter - John Sanders. And all Constables and others are hereby required to use their utmost endeavours in apprehending the said Absentees, and lodging them in safe Custody. By Command of His Excellency the Governor, ISSAC NICHOLS, Principal Superintendent.
