12335. James Spiers was tried at Berks. Ass, 23 Feb 1839 for stealing wood – Stealing firewood at Reading.- 7 days for turnips- 12 mos. For hay. Widower.. 14yr sentence. Transported to Norfolk Island per ‘Woodbridge’ & “Augusta Jesse”, arriving 27 Mar 1840. Widower; f. labourer; 5’ 6 ”; aged 40 yrs; Protestant; can neither read nor write; ruddy complexion; brown hair; hazel. Native place of birth – Watford, Hertfordshire. Transferred to Van Diemen’s Land per the ‘Duke of Richmond’, arriving 12/03/1844. The Augusta Jessie sailed yesterday for Norfolk Island with prisoners; she has taken in addition to her original number 80 from on board the Woodbridge. The male convicts per Woodbridge are landed ; eighty of them have gone down in the Augusta Jessie to Norfolk Island, and the remainder of them sent to the different works in the interior.
