8/4/1862 Maitland Mercury, NSW: ALL ACCOUNTS due to my late husband, Charles Spratt, storekeeper, must be PAID to me within one month from this date. All Accounts unpaid after that date will be placed in the hands of my solicitor. I will pay, on presentation, all accounts due by my late husband. MARGARET SPRATT, Storekeeper. Merriwa, 5th April, 1862. 2202 Merriwa Old Catholic Cemetery Merriwa, Upper Hunter Shire, New South Wales, Australia Inscription Charles Spratt Who Departed This Life At Merriwa On Feb. 12th 1861 Aged 47 Years. Also Margaret Walker Relict Of The Above Who Departed This Life On Aug. 10th 1894, Aged 70 Years Requisecat In Pace. Blessed Are The Dead Who Die In The Lord.




The family records show he was a timber cutter who was killed while felling a tree on 29th January 1862. His prisoner number was 37/943 ahis ticket of leave number was 43/1189




Charles Spratt had a relationship with Elizabeth Attwood C1832 - they had a child Emma born in 1833. April 1835: They were living in Birmingham and robbed a man of two shillings and five pence. Elizabeth was pregnant, they were committed to take their trials at the sessions. September 1835 son Charles Attwood was born. Charles Spratt was found guilty and sentenced to 7 years transportation. Elizabeth was found guilty and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment in Birmingham. Elizabeth was convicted on 7/8/1844 receiving stolen goods - 6 months imprisonment, and on 7.1.1848 Larceny from the person - for which she was transported for 7 years. She arrived with daughter Emma on the 'Tory 1848' to VDL. Son Charles stayed in London with George Spratt the half-brother of Charles Spratt. 1837: Aged 22, Assigned to William Blaxland - Merton 1837: TOL Cassilis 1841: TOL Cassilis 27/1/1842: TOL cancelled for allowing himself, with seven other individuals, to be bailed up by two bushrangers; per Colonial Secretary's letter No. 41-448, dated 31st December 1841. 26/7/1842: COF 1843: Married Margaret McAuliff - they had 9 children. 16/2/1860: On return of spirit merchants and brewers, whose registration for the year 1860 have been notified to the Chief Inspector of Distilleries - Cassilis. 12/2/1861: Charles died in Merriwa, NSW.
