Samuel Spreadborough was convicted at Sussex on 16/09/1840, together with his wife Esther, for stealing clothes. 7yr sentence. Samuel transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the 'Tortoise', arriving 19/02/1842. (Esther was transported on the 'Rajah' 1841.) Hulk Report: Good Ship Surgeon's Report: honest, good. Married, wife Esther. 2 children. No details are given on either Conduct Record if children accompanied mother. Father: James (deceased) Mother: Sarah Aged 26yrs; Protestant; read & write; bricklayer & plasterer; 5'11"; sallow complexion; dk brown hair; brown eyes. Native Place: b. abt 1815 Madras, East Indies. Assignments in Colony. 1yr Probation, Browns River. Remarks: "quiet", "good", "good mason work". Northern districts of Tasmania - Deloraine, Westbury, Launceston. Ticket of Leave 22/08/1845 Free, by servitude 16/09/1847 Certificate 20/09/1847 (Listing on Colonial Families of a Samuel Spreadborough married at Longford, Tasmania 1857 to Ann Isabel Nicholas.) (There is also an Esther Spreadborough who married in 1888 at Westbury to Charles Stevens.)
