Philip is buried with his two sons, Philip born 16 October 1853, died 24 August 1887 and William born 25 April 1856, died 26 January 1915. Philip STAFFORD was convicted at Bath, England on 9th Jan 1845 for stealing a purse and money, from the person. 10 yr transportation sentence. Philip had previously been convicted, with a transportation sentence but served 3 years at Millbank prison. For this current offence he was sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'David Malcolm' arriving 25 Aug 1845. Aged 25yrs; 5'3 1/2" height; Protestant; single man; a tailor; fair complexion; lt brown hair; blue eyes; literate. Native place of birth: Bath, England. (ref. Convict Conduct record, VDL) Mother: Charlotte (ref. Convict Indent record) Sisters: Louisa & Maryanne Philip served his first period of Probation at Norfolk Island (off the east coast of NSW, Australia, but administered by Van Diemen's Land - at that time). 1848: in Hobart, VDL. 9 April 1850: Ticket of Leave granted. 5 Jan 1854: Misconduct. 1 Aug 1854: Conditional Pardon approved. 9 Jan 1855: Free Certificate issued. Application for permission to Marry: 10 June 1851 - application by Philip STAFFORD (David Malcolm) to Margaret SPELLICY/SPELLING (John Calvin). (ref. 52/1/3) Marriage: 30 June 1851 - marriage at St. John the Baptist, Church of England, Hobart. Philip STAFFORD, bachelor, above 21 yrs of age, licensed Hawker to Margaret SPELLING, widow, above 21 yrs of age. (ref. 37/1/10 no. 414).
