In 1841, Richard married Sarah McManis. Sarah was the daughter of James McManis (son of the the First Fleet Marine James McManis and the First Fleet Convict, Jane Poole, ‘Charlotte’, 1788) and his wife Lucy Bradley (daughter of the First Fleet Convict James Bradley, ‘Scarborough’, 1788 and the Third Fleet Convict, Sarah Barnes, ‘Mary Anne, 1791). The granddaughter of three convicts. Richard and Sarah had 10 children between 1832 and when he died in 1857. The were all baptised with the surname Stait.
