Staunton Family by Kay L Thomas descendant of both Catherine Larkin 1818 – 1865 married Patrick Staunton 1811 - 1870 Patrick Staunton was the son of Patrick Staunton (1774-1854) convicted and transported to Australia with Peter Larkin. Pat Sr came from a very substantial family – his wedding was one of the largest seen in east Galway attended by 80 carriages of the gentry. His ancestors were Norman English gentry settled in Ireland since 1232 with later emigration from English Staunton settled in Claddagh, Galway in 1634. The latter Stauntons were mainly Protestant Ascendancy, but during the penal times, some became Catholics or were patriotic to the cause. The family were not without influence in the country but this did not assist Patrick from being exiled to Australia. During these later penal times of the early nineteenth century, Patrick ran “hedge schools” risking his ascendancy wealth in support of the Catholic faith. Paddy taught hedge schools while his childhood mate, Father (Dean) John Rigney, celebrated Mass. Rigney was later to become Parish priest at Wollongong and marry Patrick’s son and baptise his grandchildren. He hedge school was not the only education Patrick offered his fellow Catholic rebels. Captain Patrick Staunton was the leader of the “ribbonmen” who fought to defend the rights of the tenants against their English absentee landlords who were oppressing more than their faith. It was a Ribbonmen that Patrick drew attention from the Police and ultimately his arrest for ‘Sedition’.

Patrick Staunton Sr (1774-1854) was transported to Australia with Peter Larkin in 1821. Patrick Sr. came from a very substantial family his wedding being one of the largest seen in east Galway attended by 80 carriages of the gentry and the Viceroy for Ireland. His ancestors were Norman English who had settled in Ireland since 1232. Patrick Sr. married Catherine Mulhair daughter of Joseph Mulhair and Hannah Quigley b. 1781 and d. 21st August 1867 at Moruya in New South Wales. They had 7 children, 4 of whom settled in Australia (Patrick, John, Thomas and James),while 2 joined the Police in Ireland, turned informant and eventually settled in the United States. One daughter Mary was killed in 1813 by Police. Patrick, Peter Larkin and Father (Dean) John Rigney taught Irish children in a hedge school. This was forbidden by the English. Captain Staunton was also the leader of a band of Ribbonmen who fought to defend the rights of the tenants against the English absentee landlords. It was as a Ribbonman that Patrick drew attention from the Police and ultimately his arrest for sedition. Patrick Staunton and Peter Larkin sailed as convicts from Cork on the ship John Barry on the 16th June 1821 arriving in Sydney on the 7th November 1821. Their families later came to join them. Patrick's son, also Patrick b. 1811 Galway d. 1879 Moruya NSW, married Catherine Larkin (Peter Larkin's youngest daughter) in 1840. Fr Rigney officiated at the wedding. Most Stauntons in Australia would be decendents or related to Patrick Staunton Sr., especially if they came from south west Galway and Roscommon.
