Theft; simple larceny (from 1827). 27th May 1830 Text type Trial account Defendants MARY STEVENS Offences Theft > Simple larceny Session Date 27th May 1830 Reference Number t18300527-45 Verdicts Guilty Punishments Transportation 1078. MARY STEVENS was indicted for stealing, on the 14th of May , 1 gown, value 30s.; 1 cap, value 3s.; 1 veil, value 15s., and 1 shawl, value 20s. , the goods of Frances Eliza Johnson . FRANCES ELIZA JOHNSON . I am an unfortunate woman, and lodge in Hill-street; the prisoner was servant at the house. On the 14th of May I was out from twelve o'clock in the morning till nine in the evening; I had left my parlour door locked - I missed this property, and went in search of the prisoner that evening, but could not find her till the next day. JAMES TRAIL . I am shopman to a pawnbroker. I have a silk dress, pawned by the prisoner on the 14th of May, in the name of Shonk. ROWLAND SWANN . I am an officer, and took the prisoner.(Property produced and sworn to.) Prisoner. She has often sent me to pawn the dress; I spent some of the money, and did not like to return. FRANCES ELIZA JOHNSON. I have sent her with some things, but not these - I sent her always in my own name; I did not tell her sister if I had 6l. I would not appear against her; I said I would not be treated in that shameful manner. GUILTY . Aged 23. - Transported for Seven Years .
