Charles was tried and convicted along with William Bramsley and George Naden. Charles was later sent to the 'Ceres' hulk at Portsmouth where he was employed as a carpenter on the Cumberland Fort construction works. They were convicted of stealing 2 deal boxes containing jewellery and other goods. 30/11/1789: Embarked on the 'Surprise' transport September 1794. With the Governor's assistance Charles secured a position as a carpenter's assistant on the 'Surprise' transport. His sentence had expired by this time. 17/12/1794: Charles sailed with the 'Surprise' when it left Sydney for Bengal in India. 14/5/1796: Was listed as a crew member of the 'Surprise' when it docked at Greenhithe on the Thames.
