Catherine Sullivan/Sulivan was convicted at Lewes on 23/09/1846 for stealing wearing apparel. Also convicted, Mary Welsh. 10yr sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on the 'Asia', arriving 21/07/1847. Catherine was a widow, 1 child - Mary Ann Toomey who accompanied her onboard. Born abt 1818 Limerick. Aged 29yrs upon arrival in Colony. Housemaid; 5'1 1/4"; can read; Roman Catholic. Father of child is listed as Henry Toomey. Mary Ann was admitted to the Queens Orphan School, New Town (nr Hobart), as was the custom, on 26/07/1847. Discharged 26/09/1850 - to Wm Inley, Hobart (most likely to service). Services in the Colony. Anson Station Gang. Some minor records of misconduct and in 1849 sent to the Cascades Female Factory, Hobart. Application for permission to marry - approved. Married James Cooper (free) (ref. 32/1851-37 Brighton district). (Recorded as Sulivan - one 'l') Ticket of Leave 23/11/1852 29/06/1855: released to her husband, James Cooper.
