Jeremiah Sullivan is mentioned in the Criminal Petition submitted on behalf of fellow convict, Robert Dennis, who arrived on the same ship. National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/27/37. Date. 1831 Sept 16. Prisoner name: Robert Dennis. Prisoner occupation: Former Private in the 82nd Regiment of Foot, a native of Halifax, Yorkshire. Court and date of trial: County Cork Spring Assizes, 1817. Crime: Felonious assault, in the streets of Cork, in 1817. Initial sentence: [Death recorded] and commuted to transportation for life. Annotated (Outcome): 'In New South Wales'; 'Nil'. Petitioner(s): 52 inhabitants of Halifax including three magistrates, five surgeons, six attorneys and seven clergymen. Grounds for clemency (Petition Details): The crime was unpremeditated and committed whilst intoxicated; his good conduct in the army and in New South Wales; his parents' good character. Other papers: Note from Lord Morpeth endorsing the respectability of the signatories to the petition. Additional Information: Convict served eight years in the 82nd Regiment - details of his army service are given. Convicted with Jeremiah Sullivan (fellow private in the 82nd Regiment) who was also sentenced to death and commuted to transportation for life.
