Devizes and Wiltshire Gazette Wiltshire, England 7 Oct 1830 From Correspondent. —At Magistrates Meeting held yesterday at Chippenham, several respectable inhabitants of the Borough of Calne attended, to claim Joseph Knee, Robert Sumner, and William Sumner, for burglary; and Charles Fisher, for sheep-stealing ; all of whom are to be transported for life.— William Mavelly, Thomas Harding, and Charles Bishop, for sheep stealing; to be transported for seven years Robert Sumner was convicted and transported with his brother, William (also on board) for “Burglary/Housebreaking”. Robert was 23 years old, 5’7” tall, dark brown hair, light grey eyes, stout made, woman on breast, was single, illiterate, protestant. Robert had been in prison before for Housebreaking and once was tried and acquitted for sheep stealing. 1832 Muster: Public Works 1833 Muster: Public Works 1835 Muster: Assigned to Mr W Wright. 18/5/1836: Appointed as a Constable. 8/6/1841: Married Margaret Pennycook (Atwick 1837) – 2 daughters listed.
