The convict indentures state that John Surbes or Surlies was 36 years old. He could neither read nor write; religion Protestant; status single and a native of Middlesex, England. He was a cook and a soldier (No occupation code for this combination). John was convicted of stealing clothes at Kilkenny on 8 October 1835 and sentenced to 7 years. Physical attributes: Height 5 feet 5 inches; complexion very dark sallow; hair brown mixed with grey and eyes hazel. Transport number 125. Prisoner number 36-1928. Comment on indentures 'mark of I. Surles, died Feb 1825 on upper left arm and Susan Randles on left arm'. 1837 NSW General Census John Surbes or Surlies was assigned to Hospital, Goulburn, NSW (Presumably because of his cooking skills not because he was ill.) Received ticket of leave on 13 November 1840 (number 40/2569) at Goulburn. Received Certificate of Freedom on 20 October 1843 (43/1758). Still in Goulburn on 27 December 1843. Please note that the spelling of his surname may not be correct. Since he could not read or write there may be variations in the spelling of his surname.
