James Sutherland, born in Tasmania 1865, was convicted at the Hobart Supreme Court, Tasmania for the murder of William Wilson (a railway worker from Cleveland). Death sentence - to be hanged 04/06/1883. Jointly charged with James Ogden, who was also convicted and executed. (Report of trial, Mercury newspaper 15-16/05/1883,) James had been previously charged, at Longford, Tasmania, on 17/11/1878 for being idle and disorderly (aged 13yrs). Discharged from prison Feb 1879 and assigned to Webbs Hotel. The photograph, as on the Convict Records web site 2014 is attributed to be this James Sutherland as taken by photographer Thomas J. Nevin.
