William (Be/urgen/in) was born perhaps on 3 8 1777 & christened perhaps on 5 8 1777 at East Smithfield St Botolph Aldgate London; he became a photographer (perhaps amateur) in the colony. He was tried w/1other for burglary & stealing silk stockings etc, on 23 4 1797, of William (Higginbotham) at Old Bailey on 11 5 1797, sentenced to death commuted to Life, held at London or Middlesex Gaol Delivery & Newgate & hulks LA FORTUNA & CERES in Portsmouth Harbour & arrived in Botany Bay NSW as a convict on 26 7 1799 after a voyage of 9months on HILSBOROUGH; the ship was riddled with typhoid & bad management. He was granted land in Church St Sydney & George St Parramatta about 1819, as well as 50acres at Prospect about 1822 to which he added 50acres by purchase. He & his son Henry obtained publicans licences from about 1821. He appears to have purchased land on Windsor Rd Parramatta about 1823 for his son Henry; although this was disputed as mentioned on this Website. He is stated in 1824 to be a Pound keeper for horses. He & his son Henry operated The Strong Man from 1825-38 & The Farriers Arms from 1833-7 in Church St Sydney. He was recorded in 1828 with his family with Conditional Pardon as publican Parramatta. In 1835 he apportioned 5acres in trust to his son & John (Hillas) for his daughter & George (Hillas). He died on 21 12 1838 age61 at Parramatta father of perhaps 5children & was buried at St Johns CofE Parramatta. [Some details taken from this Website] Despite the layout of this information - this Website contains information that Sarah (Tandy) & Mary (West) are the same person.
