Mary/Margaret Tanner died 14 March 1899 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. She is buried at the Ballarat, New Cemetery, CofE "C" section 5, grave 15. The child born in Tasmania in 1845 was Mary Ann McCormick, who married Robert Francis in Ballarat in 1863. Mary/Margaret's father given as Thomas Tanner on her death certificate, completed by her daughter Mary Ann. Her husband remaining in Ireland was Thomas Peake not Leake, (the original record is quite clear).




Margaret Tanner was transported to van Diemen's Land. She was a married woman with one child. Husband Thomas Leake, Queens County. Convict no. 69106. Age 27yrs; fresh complexion; brown hair; brown eyes; house servant. Several Colonial offences. Some time at House of Corrections, Cascades Female Factory. 1842 Muster - Hobart district Delivered of a female child 19 Feb 1845 (father's name not recorded) ref. 960/1842-33 Hobart district.




Margaret became Michael McCormick's (Atlas 1833) common law wife and they lived together in Victoria from the mid 1840s till his death in 1866. Margaret (also known as Mary), died in 1899; she and Michael have many descendants today.
