National Archives. Criminal Petitions. HO 17/2/791826 Sept - 1827 Feb Prisoner name: Charles Taylor. Prisoner occupation: Soldier, band master. Court and date of trial: Surrey Winter Assizes 1826. Crime: Coining. Initial sentence: Death commuted to transportation for life. Annotated: Nil. Petitioner(s): Two petitions from the prisoner. Charles Taylor and Elizabeth Taylor. Grounds for clemency: Has served 26 years in the East and West and the Peninsula Wars with distinction; was wounded in the service of his country; no previous offence; got into bad company; has two sons now in the army; has four children; ask that the youngest child goes with either parent and that the parents be sent to the same place. Other papers: Marriage certificate between Charles Taylor and Elizabeth Lawrence in the parish of Saint Luke's Chelsea 28 March 1819. Nicholas Cloak surgeon, certifying that Charles Taylor bore a good character in the army. Additional Information: In Horsemonger Lane Gaol. The convict served with the 88th Foot. The convict's wife (Elizabeth Taylor) is also under sentence of transportation for life.
