Accidents, Offenses, & On Saturday night the stable and barn of J. Blaxland, Esq., at Newington, was burnt to the ground, and four men burnt to death. The fire originated through the carelessness of a boy sticking a piece of lighted candle near the manger. The Sydney Monitor (NSW : 1828 - 1838) Wed 11 Jan 1832 Page 4 On Saturday night, between the hours of ten and eleven, a fire broke out in one of Mr. Blaxland stables, at Newington, in which two men and two boys unfortunately perished. It was occasioned by one of the boys carelessly leaving a lighted-candle in the hay-loft, where there was considerable quantity of straw. But for the stillness of the night, and the prompt and praise-worthy efforts of all the servants, the whole premises must have been destroyed; too much cannot be said in praise of their exertions.
