Convict Permission to Marry. James Riley, convict per Hindostan, and Matilda Taylor, convict per Mary Ann. Requested at Sydney, 7 Oct 1822.


Convicted at Salford New Bailey 16/7/1821 during the Lancaster Quarter Sessions. Matilda had stolen 9 shillings. She was sent to Lancaster Castle to await transportation. The musters show Matilda had been a servant to banker and businessman Prosper De Mestre. Matilda married James Riley (ship- Hindostan) shortly after arrival in October 1822 at St Philips, Sydney. In September 1823, Matilda was found guilty of receiving stolen goods and she was sent to the female factory for one year. Matilda died on the 9th July 1825, aged 29 and was buried two days later. within the parish of St James.
