Thomas TAYLOR (also known as Edward MANN) was convicted at Lancaster, England on 3 June 1833 for stealing a watch. Gaol Report: "Two previous convictions". Stated his real name was "Edward Mann". 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'John' arriving there 1 Dec 1833. Ship surgeon's report: "bad". Single man; aged 25 yrs; bricklayer's labourer; 5'9 1/2" height; dark complexion; brown hair; Hazel eyes. Native place of birth: Ramsgate, England. VDL: Assigned to work services and road parties, chain gangs. Numerous reports of misconduct and punishments. 7 Feb 1837: Richmond, VDL - extension of sentence for 12 mths. 1841: Free Certificate issued, no. 411. 21 Oct 1844: Stealing - 12mths imprisonment with hard labour. 26 Nov 1844: at Glenorchy, insolence. 14 days solitary confinement. 8 Jan 1845: at Glenorcy. Refusing to work. 10 days solitary confinement.
