The Fatal Affray at Frame.—An inquest was held on Wednesday, at the George Inn, Frome, before Mr. Ashford, the body of Benjamin Butcher, the unfortunate man who was assaulted at the Angel aud Crown publichouse, in that town, the 2nd inst. It appeared in evidence—that the deceased was sitting drinking with some friends, in the public-house, at about half-past nine in the evening, when two Irishmen entered, and began conversing with a female in the room. Butcher said something to the Irishmen, when some words Passed about fighting; whereupon Butcher rose up, took off his coat, and slightly struck the two men in the face. At this moment two other-irishmen entered, and one of them seized the kitchen poker, and felled the deceased the ground by most violent blow on the right eye, which fractured his skull in a dreadful manner. Butcher’s brother seeing him fall, rose immediately to his assistance; when the same man knocked him down also, senseless. Upon this, the four Irishmen took to flight, but they were soon after apprehended, and taken before the magistrates, when Michael Tekin, acknowledged that the blows had been struck by him alone, and he was in consequence immediately committed to Shepton gaol: the other three were liberated. The deceased languished until Monday the 14th. Several witnesses having been examined the jury gave their verdict “wilful murder.” Oxford University and City Herald, 26 June 1830.
