Age and other details: On his VDL Convict description record of 1833, he is listed as Alexander Telford alias Telfer, 17, 5'2" with brown hair and grey eyes, and a labourer from Edinburgh (see http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.htm?CON18-1-9,115).
1833: On arrival in VDL, Alexander Telfer alias Telford was listed as single. He said he had been transported to stealing a pair of shoes, and had previously been convicted for stealing books (2 months), a bottle of whiskey (2 months) as well as two other charges of theft (30 days, 4 months) (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-43$init=CON31-1-43p114). 1833: Muster - assigned to Public Works (see New South Wales and Tasmania, Australia Convict Musters, 1806-1849). 1835-1837: Musters - assigned to Mr Brodie (see New South Wales and Tasmania, Australia Convict Musters, 1806-1849). 1838, 31 August: He is on a list of recipients of Tickets of Leave (see The Hobart Town Courier, p2). 1839, 29 June: He is on a list of those eligible for Certificates of Freedom (see The Hobart Town Courier, p1). 1842, March: Alexander Telfer was charged with stealing a jacket but he was acquitted when tried at Oatlands in late March (see Colonial Times, 5 April, p3).
1832, 8 August: Alexander Telfers [sic] or Telford, 16, was received aboard the prison hulk Retribution at Woolwich. He was sent from there for transportation on 5 July 1833 (see UK, Prison Hulk Registers and Letter Books, 1802-1849).
1832: Precognition against Alexander Telfer for the crime of theft, habit and repute at East William Street, Edinburgh. Accused: Alexander Telfer, alias Telford, junior. Son of surgeon in Royal Navy, Age: 15, Address: Carnegie Street, Edinburgh, with father. Victim: William Howat, East William Street, Edinburgh (see National Records of Scotland; Reference AD14/32/326). --0-- 1832, 14 July: Trial papers relating to Alexander Telfer for the crime of theft, habit and repute at East William Street, Edinburgh. Tried at High Court, Edinburgh. Accused: Alexander Telfer, alias Telford, junior. Son of surgeon in Royal Navy, Verdict: Guilty, Sentence: Transportation - 7 years Previous convictions: theft.
