Convict Notes




Thomas was 21 years old on arrival in VDL. Thomas was 5'4 1/4" tall, fair complexion, brown hair and whiskers, grey eyes, tattoos. 1832-35: Assigned to D Mackersey. July 1845: CP 12/8/1845: CP extended to Australia. Thomas Brooke married Jane Cundell at St Matthews, New Norfolk in 1844 and their first daughter, Mary Anne, was born in Tasmania seven months later. In October 1845 he moved to Victoria and was employed at Mt Shadwell. Jane, was pregnant and remained in Tasmania until after the birth in Feb 1846. She had joined Thomas by 1848 when the next daughter, Isabella was born (in Mt Shadwell). Jane (C1821-1904) had arrived in Australia in 1840, as a free 18 year old nursery maid. Thomas and Jane had 12? Children.




At marriage and in later life known as Brooks.




Married in Hobart 2 Jan 1844 and then went to Victoria and lived in and around Mortlake till his death. His wife Jane Cundell (Condell) died in May 1904. Both are buried in Mortlake Cemetery. At his marriage in 1844 his age is given as 28 - indicates birth year as 1815 but other references are to 1812.
