Thomas Kelly, age 31, per City of Edinburgh (2) 1832, Tried Galway, 1831, Life, for Arson, Whiteboy rebel, DOB, 1801, native place, Galway, married, 1 child, Trade: Ploughman reaper sower. Catholic. --------------------------------------------------- Ireland. SECOND DAY - SATURDAY. Thomas Kelly was put to the bar, charged with having set fire to the house of Michael Glynn, on :he 29th of May. The prosecutor caught the prisoner, who had two coals of fire in a wooden mug, when he put the fire under the thatch in two places. This was the third attempt at burning the house over his head. The prisoner said, when taxed with the crime, he meant the witness no harm whatever, but the burning was directed against another person—the proprietor. It appeared that this land where the house was had been a commonage, but was subsequently inclosed. The prisoner received a most excellent character. —Guilty. It seems the commission will terminate on Tuesday or Wednesday, as it is apprehended that witnesses will not come in to prosecute, so afraid are they of being assassinated. Many jurors were called on fines of 50/. Sun (London) 15 June 1831. Fifth Day Wednesday This morning their Lordships, Judges Moore and Jebb, entered the court, house, when the prisoners who were convicted were brought forward to receive sentence. Connor Connear, John Kinneen, John Mooney, and Laurence Ferrell, were sentenced to be transported for life. Horogan and John M‘Andrew are to be imprisoned twelve months and kept to hard labour. Judge Moore now placed the black cap on his head, and in a very feeling and exhorting manner, passed sentence of death Kelly, Ryan, and Ward. The day of their execution not named, but it is considered that it will take place on the 9th July next. The four wretches sentenced for transportation were placed on cart, and to the melancholy wailings of their friends and relatives, sent off to Cork, escorted by a strong party the 4th dragoons.
