National archives. HO 17/54/351829 Oct 13 Prisoner name: Thomas Rice. Prisoner age: 13. Court and date of trial: Lancaster Summer Assizes 1829. Crime: Burglary. Initial sentence: Death, commuted to transportation for life. Annotated: Nil. Petitioner(s): Three inhabitants of [Liverpool] vouching for the characters of the convict's parents; Rose Rice the prisoner's mother of Pownal Street, Liverpool, with four inhabitants of [Liverpool]. Grounds for clemency: Induced to the crime by others older than he; his young age. Additional Information: The prisoner was held in Lancaster Castle Gaol.
Thomas Rice married Emma Armfield at St James Church in Melbourne 1842 Emma had previously married to Henry Armfield Emma was a widow when has married Thomas. Armfield was her married name from her first marriage her maiden name was Perry the Emma Armfield from NSW is not the correct Emma
Thomas and Emma had 8 children between 1845 and about 1865. These are:- Rose 1845, Ellen 1848, Agnes 1850, William 1853, Jane 1856, Robert 1859, James 1862 and Emma Ann (date not known).
Thomas married Emma Mary Armfield 1st April 1842 at St James, Melbourne, Victoria. Emma Mary was the daughter of Edward Armfield (Convict, 1801, “Earl Cornwallis”) and Elizabeth Ruse, who was herself the daughter of James Ruse (First Fleet Convict, 1788, “Scarborough”) and Elizabeth Perry (Second Fleet Convict, 1790, “lady Juliana”).
