1832: On arrival in VDL, Henry Thomas was listed as 18 years old. He was a labourer and a printer (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON18-1-10$init=CON18-1-10p52). 1841, 14 October: Henry was granted a Conditional Pardon. 1845: Henry received his Free Certificate No.880 (see https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON31-1-43$init=CON31-1-43p73).


1831, 17 February: HENRY THOMAS appeared before the Old Bailey twice in seven months - each time on a charge of stealing by picking pockets. Below are the transcripts from his trials: "#551. HENRY THOMAS was indicted for stealing, on the 17th of January, 1 handkerchief, value 3s., the goods of James Hopkins, from his person. JAMES HOPKINS: I am a carrier, and live in Great Dover-street. On the 17th of February I was in Longlane, near the pig-market at Smithfield , and felt a twitch at my coat pocket; I turned, and saw the prisoner about a yard from me - he was the nearest person to me: I seized him instantly, and observed him shifting his coat - I suspected he had my handkerchief; I put my hand into his breast pocket, and pulled it out - this is it. THOMAS BARKER: I am an officer, and produce the handkerchief, which I received from the witness, with the prisoner. Prisoner's Defence: I did not do it - there were two lads who threw it down; I picked it up, and put it into my pocket - the other two ran away. MR. HOPKINS: There were no lads near me. GUILTY. Aged 18. Confined Six Months, and Whipped." ---00--- 1831, 8 September: HENRY THOMAS was again before the Old Bailey: "#1628. HENRY THOMAS was indicted for stealing, on the 2nd of August, 1 handkerchief, value 6d., the goods of John Gardner, from his person. THOMAS CUSS: I live in Buckingham-street, Strand, and am a constable. On the morning of the 22nd of August I saw the prisoner and another lad in Smithfield, following John Gardner - I followed a little way, and saw the prisoner putting a handkerchief into his own pocket; he saw me then threw it among some sheep, and ran away- I called 'Stop thief!' and some butchers stopped him - a boy took up the handkerchief, and gave it to me. Prisoner: Q: Did you see me take it? A: No. JOHN GARDNER: I live at No. 12, Gloucester-street, St. John-street-road. On the 22nd of August I was in Smithfield, and heard a cry of 'Stop thief!' I turned, saw the prisoner stopped by a butcher, and saw some person throw my handkerchief among some sheep - it was safe in my pocket shortly before.(Property produced and sworn to.) Prisoner: I have been convicted here before - I then went home, but my father could do nothing for me; I was going to get a ship when the officer laid hold of me. GUILTY.
