Agnes THOMPSON was convicted at Northumberland, England, along with James Clegg, on 22 Feb 1849 for robbery from the person, with violence, and stealing money. 10 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship "Stately" arriving there 2 Sept 1849. Aged 20 yrs; single woman; housemaid; 5' height; Protestant; can read; fresh complexion; black hair; dk Hazel eyes; tatoos. Native place of birth: Greenock, Scotland. Brother: John (ref. as stated on convict record) Sisters: Sarah & Anne Recorded that James Clegg received a 15 yr sentence and that Agnes left him, at Newcastle, England. Colony of VDL: Stationed on the "Anson" hulk ship on the River Derwent, Hobart. Assigned to various work services. 1851: Absconded. 6mthd hard labour. MARRIAGE: 23 Nov 1852: Agnes THOMPSON (per Statley), aged 22 yrs, Pass holder, to John BETTINSON, aged 30 yrs, labourer, at Parish Church, George Town, district of Launceston. (ref. 37/1/11 no. 959 & noted on her convict conduct record). There is a record for a John BETTINSON convict on the ship "Asia" 1840. 21 Feb 1854: Ticket of leave granted. 17 July 1855: Representing herself to be free. 1 mth hard labour. 3 March 1856: Out after hours. 6 mths hard labour 22 April 1856: Drunk. 1 mth hard labour 9 March 1857: Larceny. 9 mths hard labour 22 Jan 1863: at Launceston - disturbing the peace. 1 mth hard labour. CHILD: Sarah Ann BETTINSON (however indexed as "BATTONSON") born 2 Feb 1855 at Launceston. Father - John BETTINSON, labourer. Mother - Agnes BETTINSON, formerly THOMPSON. (ref. 33/1/3 no. 549) Sarah Ann died 1 March 1855 aged only 1 month, labourer's child, cause - water on the brain. (ref. 35/1/24 no. 1692. Indexed under "BETTESON" (N.B. There was another person by same name, Agnes Thompson, convict, in the Colony abt the same time.)
