HIS Excellency the Governor directs it to be notified, that, in pursuance of a Despatch, dated 3rd April, 1841, No. 235, from the Right Honorable the Secretary of State for the Colonies, a Free Pardon has been granted to Sylvester Thornton, by the ship Marquis of Huntley (I). By His Excellency's Command, E. DEAS THOMSON. NSW Govt Gazette, 7 Sep 1841. -------------------------------------------------- New Insolvents. — Sylvester Thornton, of Muswellbrook, publican : debts, 912/. 7s, 10d. ; assets, landed property, 700/. ; personal property, 70/. ; outstanding debts, 78/. 7s 3d. ; balance deficiency, 64/. 0s. 7d. ; Clark Irving, official assignee. The Weekly Register of Politics, etc. 7 Dec 1844. DIED. On the 14th April, at his residence, Muswellbrook, after a few days' illness, Mr. Silvester Thornton, innkeeper, aged 35 years. ( By Order of the Official Assignee, under the Act, Vic. 5, No. 17,) viz: «THORNTON'S HOTEL," NOW IN FULL TRADE, AND LICENSED FOR ONE YEAR FROM JUNE, 1845. RENTAL-£70 PER ANNUM. MR. STUBBS is instructed to sell by public auction, at the Mart, King street. ON THURSDAY, THE 10TH DAY OF JULY, 1845, At Twelve o'clock punctually, All the right, title, and interest, of Mr. Clarke Irving, Official Assignee, to the Insolvent Estate of Silvester Thornton, as such assignee, in and to the premises known as THORNTON'S FAMILY HOTEL. In the Township of Muswellbrook, inclusive of Shop adjoining, let at 6s. to 7s. Per week, and one six-stall stable and coach-house. The House contains on the ground floor - One large parlour, 15 feet 4 inches by 14 feet 6 inches Large bar, 14, 2 by 15, 4 Inner parlour, 15, 4 by 15 Bedroom, off ditto, 10 x 6 by 10 Sitting room, 10 x 6 by 10 Laundry, 17 by 10. Large back kitchen and offices, with servants' bedrooms, with garden in full cultivation, and yard attached UPPER FLAT. Four splendid bedrooms, the whole length and breadth of the house. The whole contained on one acre and a quarter. ALSO, The Assignee's right, title, and interest, in and to a certain Cottage next the Allotment, and Home erected thereon, known in Muswellbrook as "WYLD'S," and situated on the west side of the road just entering the Township of Muswellbrook from Singleton. This Cottage is partly weatherboard, and part brick, and contains four rooms and a side kitchen, with a garden in full cultivation, the whole contained on a half-acre allotment. The Garden is the finest in Muswellbrook. A VERY SNUG RESIDENCE, At present occupied by the Chief Constable. This Cottage is let on lease to the Chief Constable of Muswellbrook, at the rent of £615 per annum, and is one of the most compact Cottages in the Township, and was erected by the late S. Thornton about two years ago. Terms liberal, at Sale. Parties may treat for Stock and Fixtures after the sale. Sydney Morning Herald, 20 Jun 1845.

He was 14 on conviction and it was believed that his confession had been made under duress. The rope maker where he was employed at the time had workers who were combining for better wages and he may have been a scapegoat as they may have burnt the premises. He therefore escaped the death penalty and was transported. He became a carpenter

Lancaster Assizes Silvester Thornton, 14, for maliciously setting fire to a warehouse and building, belonging to George Duncan, and James Currie Duncan, at Liverpool. Lancaster Gazette, 20 Mar 1824. Euryalus hulk record. HO-9-2-4 page 1 Fourteen from the Justicia Hulk, 9 May 1825 Silvester Thornton, No 248, age 14, Crime, arson, Lancaster, 1 Sept 1824, sentence -Life, How disposed of- NSW Marquis of Huntley, 6 May 1826. The prison hulk, the Euryalus, an ex-frigate of the Trafalgar fleet, was moored at Chatham. Over the twenty years that this hulk serviced juveniles, about 2,500 boys of fourteen and under passed through. There were also considerable numbers of older boys both in the juvenile hulk and distributed among the other hulks. From the Euryalus, boys were transported both to New South Wales and to Van Diemen’s Land.
