Edward THWAITES was convicted at Peterborough, Northampton, England on 4 March 1844 for Highway Robbery. Stated he had knocked down a soldier from the 64th Regiment and took his money . Gaol Report: 2nd conviction, previously for stealing. 12 yr transportation sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Maria Somes', departing 8 March 1844 to arrive 30 July 1844. Aged 20 yrs; single man; a shoemaker; 5'5 1/2"; sallow complexion; light brown hair; blue eyes; Protestant; can read & write. Native place of birth: Wheedon, England. Mother: Maria Brothers: William, John, Thomas. Robert, Josiah & George. Sister: Mary VDL: 18 months Probation Period. 1st Station Gang: The Cascades, South Hobart. Some records of misconduct and punishments. 1 April 1851: Ticket of Leave granted. 1 Nov 1853: Ticket of Leave revoked. 10 Nov 1854: Absconded. 27 Nov 1854: Making away with a Jacket & Trousers. 3 months hard labour. 2 Dec 1854: Absconded. 18 months hard labour. Sent to Port Arthur Penal Settlement. March 1856: Free Certificate issued. 1856: was at Bothwell, Tasmania.
