James was convicted of stealing spectacles. On 1st January 1840 he obtained his Certificate of Freedom. James married an Indigenous woman in 1841 named Jinnie, Jane or Jenny and this union produced 8 children. James' brother Maurice was also transported in 1827 onboard the Morley.
