Newspaper report is not clear. Martin Tims, carpenter, Barkway was convicted feloniously of stealing of William Henry Clinton apprehension prisoner this arose of confession he voluntarily custody under suspicion concerned in another in last ? The offence which indicted committed in 183? Another indictment stealing six turkeys the properly of Mr White, upon which he pleaded guilty, ten years. Essex and Herts Mercury, 10 July 1838.

Court and date of trial: Hertford [Hertfordshire] Quarter Sessions, July 1838. Crime: Stealing sheep, the property of Sir William Henry Clinton KCB. Initial sentence: 15 years transportation. Gaoler's report: Character bad, convicted before. Annotated: Nil. Petitioner(s): 16 people of Barkway [Hertfordshire], including the prosecutor. Grounds for clemency: The prisoner's behaviour has always been honest and sober; led astray by someone he met while undergoing his apprenticeship; the prisoner's parents had been respectably employed until the death of his father; prisoner is penitent and voluntarily confessed, leading to his conviction, there being no other evidence against him. Other papers: A letter from Arthur Jackson MP forwarding the petition. A letter from [Rowland Aston] with the petition confirming the respectability of the signatories. Additional Information: The petition states initial sentence was 10 years transportation. Prisoner held on board the hulk Ganymede.
