Convict Notes

CON15-1-5 Image 303 Trial; 3 July 1848. Aged 50 years old Widow - 3 children Offence; Setting fire to a house, persons being inside DIED; 11 January 1850 at General Hospital Hobart

According to the Surgeons records Mary Tobin aged 45 died onboard the Stately of Gastritis https://www.femaleconvicts.org.au/docs2/ships/SurgeonsJournal-Part1-Stately1849.pdf

Mary had four children: M Revell 1857; Catherine Revell 1859 (married George Whittington and moved to Melbourne); Isabella Matilda Revell 1861 and Mary Ann Revell 1863. Her husband Henry Revell was transported to Tasmania in 1851 on the Lady Kennaway.

There has been great confusion in regards to Mary Tobin as there are 3 convict mary tobins. My Mary tobin was married to Henry revell and was born in 1834 and died in 1864. However: it seems that was another mary tobin on the Stately who was convicted at the central criminal court. According to the data base below http://www.femaleconvicts.org.au/images/pdfs/ConvictsInDatabase.pdf (complete list of female convicts sent to VDL ) Tobin, Mary "Earl Grey" (4) 378 (this is our mary) Tobin, Mary "Mellish" (2) 68 14 January 1830 at Middx, England (too old to be our mary) Tobin, Mary "Stately" (1) 354 3 July 1848 at C.C. Court, England (too old to be our mary- I found her in another data based which said she was a widow of about 50)

There is a death notice/article about her death in the Trove online newspapers. She was approx 30 when she died

Mary married a convict called Henry Revell who was transported in 1851. She died at an early age, about 21 y.o. Family history has it that she was a particularly good looking woman and died as the result of a 'peeping Tom' staring through her bedroom window in Hobart.
