APPLICATION FOR PERMISSION TO MARRY: 4 March 1853 - Eliza TODD (per Earl Grey) to William BURTON (per Rodney). Approved. MARRIAGE: 11 April 1853 - Elizabeth TODD, aged 24 yrs, domestic servant to William BURTON, aged 29 yrs, labourer at St. Mark's Chapel, Clarence Plains, district of Kangaroo Point (eastern shore of Hobart). Eliza TODD was convicted at Londonderry, Ireland on 28 June 1849 for Larceny - receiving stolen bonnets. Previously convicted. 7 yr transportation sentence. Admitted she had lived by means of thieving. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship "Earl Grey" arriving 9 May 1850. Aged 20 yrs; single woman; dressmaker; 5'2 1/2" height; fair complexion; lt brown hair; blue eyes; Roman Catholic; can read. Native place of birth: Londonderry, Ireland (ref. convict record) Stated her proper name was "McClosky" Father: John Colony of VDL: New Town Farm, nr Hobart. 27 July 1850: Removed from New Town Farm and transferred to the Female Factory, Cascades, Sth Hobart (to be under strict supervision) 28 May 1851: absconded Placed in service work 29 Nov 1853: Ticket of Leave granted 28 June 1856: Free Certificate issued
