The "Hercules" ship was built in 1801 at South Sheilds, England. 1801 voyage from Ireland to New South Wales, Australia. Sailed via Rio de Janeiro and the Cape. A mutiny occurred just prior to their arrival at Rio - after 45 minutes it was quashed but 13 convicts had been killed. Jeremiah Pendergass was named as the ring leader and shot. 44 deaths in total on this voyage. There was then another ship, also named, "Hercules" built 1822 at Whitby, England who made 3 trips to Austraia, in 1825, 1830 & 1832.

Absconded. Toomey John, No. 30-1894, 24, Hercules (3), Louth County, Labourer, 5 feet 2¾, hazel grey eyes, dark brown hair, dark ruddy and freckled comp. scar across point of nose, from George Barber, since 12th Instant. Third time of absconding. NSW Govt Gazette, 18 Dec 1833.




Saunders's News-Letter Dublin, Republic of Ireland 4 Nov 1829: WALL’S ROBBERY. John Tormey and James Gregory were indicted for stealing 100 watches, 100 gold seals, chains, rings, keys, also a silver watch. James Gregory was also on board. John Tormey was listed as 21 years old on arrival. Native Place: Louth County. Occupation: Labourer/pot boy. John was literate, RC, single, 5'4" tall, dark brown eyes, hazel grey eyes, dark ruddy freckled complexion, scar across point of nose. Assigned to G. Barber, Argyle.
