National Archive: Item reference HO 17/46/13 Summary: 1 individual petition (Charles Totterdell, yeoman of West Hatch, Somerset, convict's father and undersigned by 21 people, from North Curry and West Hatch, including prosecutor (trades given)) on behalf of Charles Totterdell, 36 years, butcher of North Curry [Somerset], convicted at the Somerset Summer Assizes at Wells in 1830, for sheep stealing, property of Thomas Broad, Junior, of Curry Mallet. There is also a covering letter by [name illegible] a neighbouring magistrate enclosing petition and certificate dated 16 December 1834, a certificate of the convict's good character signed by 27 people, masters and neighbours, a gaoler's report stating 'character good' and the petition was presented by Mr Labouchere, MP. Grounds for clemency: previous good character - honest, industrious and sober as certified by his previous employer, has a wife and 5 young children who are now dependent on the parish who convict supported without parochial relief, they are a large family who by his own industry trained them to be virtuous and honest who are now in distress. Convict's father asks for a shortening of the duration of the punishment so he can return to England. Initial sentence: Commuted to transportation for life, held on board Captivity hulk, Devonport, Devon and now in Van Diemen's Land. Annotated: Nil. GP 13
