Richard Townsend was listed as 21 years old on arrival in VDL - a birth date of 1822 but have also found a birth date of 1817. His brother Thomas was convicted for the same crime and was also on board. Native place listed at Catlin, Cambridgeshire but could be Kirtling. Richard was transported for 'stealing 9 bushels of wheat. Previous convictions: once for poaching 3 months. Richard was 5'9" tall, ruddy complexion, reddish brown hair, grey eyes, native place: Catlin, Cambridgeshire, small scar on top of forehead and a large wrinkle, anchor back of left hand, scar at bottom of forefinger left and, scar on 2nd joint of same finger, scar under nail 3rd finger same hand, large wart on forefinger right and, several moles on right arm, single and illiterate. 28/7/1846: TOL 6/7/1848: COF Father: John 'Jack' Townsend and Elizabeth Carter. Brothers: Thomas (on board), isaac, John. Sister: Peggy. Richard also had a brother, Matthew, a publican at Digby, NSW, and another brother William who was last heard of in Bendigo in the 1860's.
