Family connections for William (Townsend are: TOWNSEND William (Townsend) was born about 1797 at St Marylebone London. He was tried for stealing clothes, on 31 10 1816, of Maria (Trimnell) at Old Bailey, sentenced to 7years, held probably at London/Middlesex Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW on 5 4 1818 after a voyage of 5months on BATAVIA; he was Protestant. He married Rebecca (Sunderland her first marriage) on 5 8 1820 at St Johns CofE Parramatta (Smees records show 2 10 1820). He was recorded in 1827 as a farmer. He was recorded in 1828 as Free by Servitude & a farmer of 40acres at Richmond with his family. He was recorded in 1829 as a farmer. The inscription marked onto William's headstone at O'Connell Cemetery is incorrect. It gives William's date of death as 19 September 1847 which is twelve months before he went missing on 25 September 1848.

WILLIAM TOWNSEND was indicted for stealing, on the 31st of October , a shawl, value 2s. the property of Maria Trimnel ; a shawl, value 12s. the property of Sarah Cox ; and a towel, value 1s. the property of Richard Simmons . WILLIAM WALKER . On the day in the indictment, in consequence of the suspicious conduct of the prisoner, and two other persons who were with him, I pursued them, and at last secured the prisoner, who had in his possession the several articles named in the indictment belonging to the several persons whose names are stated. GUILTY , aged 18. Transported for seven years . Third Middlesex Jury, before Mr. Common Serjeant.
