The Convict Indentures state that James Traynor was 23 years old. He could read and write; religion Roman Catholic; status single and a native of County Down. He was a soldier and labourer. James was convicted of desertion on 19 May 1837 at Tipperary and sentenced to 14 years. He had one prior conviction and served 2 months. Physical attributes: Height 5 feet 9 1/2 inches; complexion ruddy and freckled; hair brown and eyes grey. Transport number 192. Prisoner number 38-189. Entrance and Description Books - I) 1840 at Newcastle state that James Traynor and 7 other prisoner returned from Newcastle to Hyde Park Barracks in Sydney. In a note it stated that 8 handcuffs and 1 chain were lost when Edward Halloran (Brampton) jumped overboard with them and drowned. Darlinghurst 10 December 1848 that James Traynor was being transferred from Liverpool, NSW to Hyde Park Barracks to serve labour for 2 calender months.
