Family connections for James (Triffett) are: Some amendments added Sep 2025. TRIFFETT James (Triffett) was born (8th of 10children) about 1769 & christened on 11 6 1769 at Whixley York & became a farmer. He was tried for stealing rum & a corkscrew, at Beverley races, at Beverley Yorkshire Quarter Sessions, sentenced to 7years & arrived in NSW as a convict on 9 7 1791 after a voyage of 6months on Fleet ship MATILDA; he was sent to Norfolk Island. He is recorded as arriving on Norfolk Island on 7 8 1790. He had a first relationship with Mary (Higgins/Harrold nee Whiston her second known relationship) from about 1794 whom he later married. [Noted that a John [James?] (Triffett) had 31.5acres (plot No.107 on west side of the island) in 1796. He is recorded as a constable Free by Servitude settler on stores on Norfolk Island in February 1805. He left Norfolk Island with his family as part of the first evacuation on 3 9 1808 (for which volunteers apparantly had been called with appropriate compensation offerred & for which he may have tried to decline as some successful farmers were asked to stay) on CITY OF EDINBURGH to Derwent Tasmania, arriving on 2 10 1808: he & his sons were later granted allottments at Back River New Norfolk/Derwent Valley. He, as (Triffett/Griffiths), married Mary (Higgins) on 22 4 1812 at New Norfolk-recorded at St Davids CofE Hobart Tasmania. He was robbed at New Norfolk by bushrangers in 1815. She is recorded as sentence expired on stores on Norfolk Island in February 1805. James Triffit was on the 'Matilda'. James was caught with a bottle of stolen rum and a cork screw at the Beverly Races. James Triffit was christened on the 11/6/1769 at Whixley, York, Eng. He was the eighth child of ten, his parents appear to have died when he was three and he seems to have been raised by his elder siblings. One week after arriving in NSW James was sent to Norfolk Island - here he met Mary Higgins nee Whiston (Juliana 1790). In 1808 James and Mary Higgins and their two sons left Norfolk Island per 'City of Edinburgh' for New Norfolk, Van Diemen's land. James and his sons were granted allotments at Back River. 22/4/1812: James married Mary. 2/4/1853: James Triffit died of 'Old age and infirmity', aged 84, at New Norfolk, Tasmania.
