Family connections for James (Tucker) are: Some amendments added Jun 2025. TUCKER James (Tucker/Tuker) was born about 1757. He was tried for stealing, on 16 8 1788, silver tea spoon etc of John (Carter) at Old Bailey on 10 9 1788, sentenced to 7years, held at Middlesex Gaol Delivery & hulk DUNKIRK from May 1789 at Plymouth Devonshire & arrived in NSW on 26 6 1790 after a voyage of of 6months on Fleet ship NEPTUNE; a voyage noted for extreme brutality of prisoners with a high death rate; he was perhaps Catholic. He was sent to Norfolk Island arriving in August 1791. He had a relationship with Elizabeth (Cole her second (2of4) relationship) on Norfolk Island. In 1796 he was tried w/2others for robbery of a miller & wife & was Pardoned on condition that he become hangman for the island for Life; he separated from Elizabeth (Cole). He is recorded in February 1805 as Free by Servitude hangman on Norfolk Island. He died as emancipist on 3 12 1807 age50 father of perhaps 4children on Norfolk Island. She was tried for burglary & stealing a womans gown from William (Cox) at Exeter Devonshire Assizes, sentenced to 7years, embarked on First Fleet ship CHARLOTTE, transferred to FRIENDSHIP at Rio de Janeiro as one of the disruptive women on board, & transferred again to PRINCE OF WALES at Cape of Good Hope & arrived in NSW as a convict on 22 1 1788 after a journey of 8months. She had a first relationship (1of4) with William (Ellis) at Port Jackson. She was sent to Norfolk Island on HMS SIRIUS on 6 3 1790 arriving on 13 3 1790 (the date of its sinking on reef near Kingston Pier Slaughter Bay, with William (Ellis). She was Free by Servitude by 1795. She had a third (3of4) relationship with Richard Cornelius (Burrows) who joined her in 1796, produced 4children & later married on 25 2 1810 at St Davids CofE Hobart. Noted an Elizabeth (Coles) had a relationship with William (Harvey) soldier. She died on 31 1 1821 age about63 mother of maybe 13children & was buried with her husband at St Davids CofE Hobart. She died on 9 2/20 12 1793 age about1 & was buried at St Phillips CofE Sydney. 1.Sarah (Tucker/Trotter) was born on 7/17 9 1793 on Norfolk Island. She died on 20 12 1793 age3m on Norfolk Island. 2.Maria/Mary (Cole/Tucker/Trotter) was born on 27 12 1795 on Norfolk Island. She was taken to Norfolk Island with her mother on HMS SIRIUS arriving on 6 3 1790 (the date of its sinking on reef near Kingston Pier Slaughter Bay). She was baptised on 10 4 1803 age7 w/hsibs.Richard, Ann & John (Burrows) on Norfolk Island. She was recorded as >2years on stores in February 1805. She went to Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) with her mother as part of the first evacuation on 3 9 1808 on CITY OF EDINBURGH arriving on 3 10 1808; to 40acres at New Town/Glenorchy. She married William (Mansfield) on 4 12 1809 at St Davids (CofE) Cathedral Hobart. She died in 3 5 1858 age62.] ..William (Mansfield) was born about 1775/9. He was tried for highway robbery at Somerset Assizes on 1 3 1802, sentenced to Death remitted to Life, held on hulk PORTLAND at Langstone Harbour Hampshire & arrived at Port Phillip (now Victoria) as a convict on 4 10 1803 after a voyage of 7+months on OCEAN (supply ship with HMS CALCUTTA) (an expedition that settled in Tasmania); he probably camped at what is now Sorrento/Sullivans Bay. He went on HMS LADY NELSON to Risdon Derwent Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) on 13 12 1803, arriving on 15 2 1804. He was granted 30acres at Glenorchy. He was Free by Servitude by 1812. He was issued his Absolute Pardon on 25 5 1816. He took out a grazing licence at the 'Black Snake Run'. He gave a (2roods) to the Church of England for the purpose of erecting a Chapel and cemetery-St Peters at South Bridgewater (later known as Granton). He died on 26 12 1852 age77 from Black Snake bite/liver complaint at Glenorchy & was buried at St Peters church Granton Van Diemens Land (Tasmania). Tried and convicted at the Old Bailey on 10th September 1788 for for stealing, on the 16th of August last, a silver tea-spoon, value 1 shilling & 6 pence. and part of a linen shirt, value 2 shillings the property of John Carter, sentenced to transportation for 7 years, he was sent to the prison hulk 'Dunkirk' moored at Plymouth. Left England on 19th January 1790. Ship:- the 'Neptune' sailed with 424 male and 78 female convicts , of which 147 males and 11 females died during the voyage, by far the worst death rate during the whole of the transportation period, earning the ship the nickname 'death ship'. Arrived on 28th June 1790. After more that a year at Sydney Cove was moved to Norfolk Island, by 1794 he was living with convict Elizabeth Cole, they had 2 children, Sarah b1793 & Maria b1795. In 1796 he was tried on Norfolk Island with two other men for his part in a night-time robbery in which a miller and his ailing wife had been tied up and a large quantity of money, clothing, flour and soap, had been stolen. One of the men was hanged and Tucker, who was said to be a Catholic, was pardoned on the condition that he agree to act as public hangman on the Island for life. James Tucker died on 3rd December 1807 on Norfolk Island Old Bailey Trial Transcription. Reference Number: t17880910-107 565. JAMES TUCKER was indicted for stealing, on the 16th of August last, a silver tea-spoon, value 1 s. 6 d. and part of a linen shirt, value 2 s. the property of John Carter . The prisoner was in the prosecutor's (a public) house, and took the things in the indictment, while the prosecutor was absent, and John Ceomer saw him with the bundle under his waistcoat, and the silver tea-spoon was found in the necessary, whither the prisoner went when the constable was sent for. GUILTY . Transported for seven years . Tried by the first Middlesex Jury before Mr. RECORDER.
