Freeman’s Journal, 14 March 1832. Escape from Prison.— Ten female prisoners, five of whom were under sentence of transportation, escaped from Kilkenny gaol about 12 o'clock on Saturday last. A small opening was made by displacing a short iron bar from one of the windows in the day-room appropriated to the use of females, through which they passed out; they then easily got on the top of an adjoining wall and dropped down in front of Mr. Smithwick's dwelling-house and passed out through that gentleman's lodge gate. It has not yet been ascertained whether the bar was removed from within or by means of assistance from the outside. The following are the names of the individuals who escaped on the occasion: Convicts. Bridget Delany, one the convicts, and one of the untried prisoners, have been since retaken at Castlecomer.
