Edmond / Edmund Tyne was born about 1805 in County Tipperary Ireland, at Ballingarry, parents Denis Tyne, a coalminer and Norah D’Orley according to his death certificate. He later used the name Edward after he was sent to Australia. Edmond Tyne was sentenced to transportation for life on 30 March 1830 at the town of Clonmel for the crime of manslaughter. The Clonmel Herald on Wednesday March 31 gives the following account of his trial: “Edmond Syne (sic) was put to the bar charged with the murder of Henry Purdue on the 23rd of July, at Ballingarry. The homicide in this case grew out of one of those faction fights that have so often disgraced the county and caused such an effusion of blood. The quarrel originated in the deceased’s crying out the name of his faction. The prisoner was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to transportation for life.” 14 Sep 1830: Ireland-Australia transportation records PPC 3533A: This is a petition purporting to be from magistrates and clergy alleging that they had no access to him in gaol in Cork, testifying to his good character, asking that he not be removed back to Cork, and they ask for a retrial on the basis that he was very sick at the time of his trial and that they can bring forward witnesses who would prove his innocence. Unfortunately the petition was a forgery! Document date is 14/9/30 according to database Edmond Tyne was transported to Sydney on the ship Edward(2) which sailed from Cork on 17 October 1830. The voyage lasted 128 days via St Jago and arrived in Sydney on 22 February 1831. Five convicts had died on the voyage and five were hospitalised when they arrived in Sydney. [Bateson] The convict indent for the ship ‘Edward’ has the following description: He was 26 years old, 5 foot 8½ inches. Pale and freckled, with brown hair and hazel eyes, and no marks ie no scars or tattoos. He was single, Catholic, and could not read or write. He had the trade or calling of ploughman, reaper and sower. He was assigned to George Mossman, of Williams River. [Bound Indentures 4/4016] 1837 muster: Tyne was still working for George Mossman in the Raymond Terrace district. Mossman had more than 30 convicts working for him at this time. 29 May 1839 Ticket of Leave for the Butterwick district. This was changed to Raymond Terrace in June 1840, and to Maitland in November 1841. 16 Oct 1839 Convict application to marry Mary Daly, granted on condition of consent of her parents 28 Oct 1839 Nov 1839 he married Mary Daly, who was 18 and had arrived on the ship Margaret with her mother on 5 January 1939. The register for Saint Josephs East Maitland has their marriage but no date: it was between 12th and 30th November 1839 (probably 24th from the birth record of his son Edward in 1860, but he gives the wrong year for the marriage, 1841) 1840 their first child was born at Green Hills. Green Hills was the Estate of Edward Close, and was later known as Morpeth. From 1842 to 1845 his children’s births are at Morpeth. They were at Brooks Flat (later known as Buchanan) by 1846. 10 Apr 1847 Conditional Pardon 1847-1860 they are still at Brooks Flat (Buchanan) – we know this from their children’s birth records. Edward Tyne died 6 Jan 1874 at Brooks Flat, near Maitland, age 68 of ‘phthisis pulmonalis’(tuberculosis) of 11 weeks duration. Edward Tyne was buried at East Maitland Catholic Burial Ground on 7 Jan 1874
