John Upton was 49 years old on arrival in VDL and was transported for 'Rape upon a child 9 years of age, at Brighton. He was a builder, and acted as a preacher to a Methodist congregation at Brighton. John was born near Horsham, Kent. He was 5'5 1/4" tall, brown hair, blue eyes, bald on top of head, small scar left shin bone, can read and write. Married, Protestant. Occupation: Carpenter & Joiner. Spent 2 1/2 years on Norfolk Island then Off Norfolk Island per Pestongee Bomangee May 1847. 5/9/1854: TOL 26/6/1855: Permission to marry Ann Coates (Free) 6/8/1855: Married at St Georges, Hobart, Ann Coates was 33, a widow and John was listed as 48, a carpenter. 2 children listed: UPTON JANE 1856, UPTON ELIZABETH ADDISON 1858. 22/7/1856: COF 9/6/1873: John Upton died of old age and infirmity, aged 76, carpenter, born Brighton, England - the informant was Abagail Coates, daughter, of Little Melbourne Street. John's last address was Harrington Street, and he was buried at the Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Hobart.
