Diabolical Atrocity. On Tuesday the 29th. ult. The family of a shopkeeper, in the parish of Cruden, were lately awoke, about midnight, by a dreadful explosion, which shook the house, filling the inmates with surprise and terror, and on getting instantly out of bed they found their shop adjoining to be on fire, and the walls and roof of it much shattered. By their exertions, however, the fire was soon extinguished and they then discovered that the shop had been broke into, and a large quantity of clothiery goods, and some money had been carried off. As powder was on none of the articles kept in the shop, there cannot be a doubt but the thieves had brought it along with them. A poor old woman, 95 years of age, sleeping in a closet at the back of the shop, had her bed removed by the shock of the explosion, the partition wall being thrown down, and the fire having caught at the back of the bed, she had a narrow escape for her life.   Next day, a new white iron lantern was found in a ditch in the neighbourhood, and there can be little doubt of its having belonged to the incendiaries. It is hoped, that the authors of these diabolical proceedings will be detected and brought to justice. Morning Post, 15 Dec 1825. --------------------------------------------------------------- In December last, we noticed in the Journal an atrocious case of housebreaking and theft, accompanied by wilful fire-raising, and blowing up the roof of a shop, which were perpetrated at Cruden, about that time. An investigation then took place, but no discovery was at that time made. Within these few days, a variety of the stolen property, we understand, has made its appearance ; and -a girl of the name of Katharine Urquhart, who was lately in the service of the people who were robbed, having been implicated, the case has undergone a farther investigation, and she has now been fully committed by the Sheriff for trial. Aberdeen Journal. Caledonian Mercury, 1 April 1826. ------------------------------------------------------------ The following persons are indicted to stand trial before the ensuing Circuit Court of Justiciary to be held at Aberdeen : …  Catherine Urquhart, housebreaking and theft, and wilful fire raising; ... Caledonian Mercury, 8 April 1826.
