William Vale born 1778 is not the William Vale that married Esther Lawrence. Esther Lawrence married William Vale who arrived on the ship "Active" and he was born around 1762.

He was tried w/1other for stealing geese etc of Jonathan (Cole) at Suffolk Assizes on 25 3 1803, sentenced to 7years, held at Bury St Edmonds & hulks at Portsmouth harbour from 10 11 1803 & arrived in NSW on 12 7 1806 after a voyage of 5or6months on FORTUNE; he was Protestant. Sent on board Fortune, 9 Jan 1806. William Vale, age 27, G. Ly, Tried at Bury St Edmunds, 25 Mar 1803. Sentence, BS 7 years. Sent on board Fortune, 9 Jan 1806. -------------------------------------------------- NSW 1828 Census Index. William Vale, age 50, F.S. per Fortune 1806, 7 years, protestant, Landholder, Wilberforce district. Holds 10 acres of land, all cleared and cultivated, and has 2 cattle. The census index shows William appears to have an assigned convict: Jonathan Sawyer, age 28. G.S. General Stewart, 1818, Life, protestant, Labourer, William Vale, Wilberforce district. However, a year later Jonathan Sawyer has absconded: Absconded. 1. Saturday last Philip Harrold and William Vale (apprehended at Mildenhall) were committed to our gaol, by John Swale, Esq. charged with stealing sundry geese, turkies, and ducks, the property of Thomas Dorr, of West Tofts, Norfolk. Bury and Norwich Post, 18 Nov 1801. -------------------------------------------------- At Bury, ... Philip Harrold, and William Vale, for stealing poultry, and Jonathan Cole, for stealing, sixteen bushels of oats in the chaff; to be transported for 7 years. St James Chronicle, 6 April 1802. -------------------------------------------------- On Sunday last Hannah Williams, Wm. Vale, and Philip Harrold, convicts in our gaol, were conveyed from thence to Portsmouth, to be put on board the Coromandel and Experiment, bound Botany Bay. Bury and Norwich Post, 9 Nov 1803.
Tried and convicted at the Suffolk Assizes on 25th March 1802, sentenced to transportation for 7 years. Left England on 28th January 1806. Ship:- the 'Fortune' sailed with 260 male convicts on board of which 4 died during the voyage. Arrived on 12th July 1806. In the Colony, William had a common law relationship with convict Ann Shadwell ('Canada' 1810) that resulted in the birth of 1 child, Hannah b1813. William died in 1859 at Richmond age 81.
